Joseph B. Meter, DO

Joseph B. Meter, DO, is a board-eligible, fellowship-trained hand and upper-extremity surgeon. With an early interest in art, Dr. Meter began his studies at Oral Roberts University as an advertising major. While there, he discovered a passion for health and fitness that unexpectedly led him toward a career in medicine.

Dr. Meter attended Oklahoma State University, where he completed a dual-degree program and earned both his medical degree and a master’s degree in biomedical sciences. His interest in orthopaedics began while caring for a farmer who had suffered a severe crush injury to his hand—an experience that ultimately led Dr. Meter to discover his passion for hand surgery.

He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Valley Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas, with additional training in complex trauma at University Medical Center and pediatric trauma at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. During his residency, Dr. Meter participated in his first hand replantation, helping surgically reattach the severed hand of a teenage patient. He recalls this as a defining experience that solidified his dedication to complex hand surgery.

Dr. Meter went on to complete a fellowship in hand and upper-extremity surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. There, he was mentored by Dr. Jonathan Isaacs, a renowned leader in peripheral nerve and brachial plexus reconstruction and the inventor of NerveTape. Dr. Meter received specialized training in the operative and nonoperative treatment of brachial plexus injuries and peripheral nerve conditions, including carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes, nerve tumors, peripheral nerve reconstruction, targeted muscle reinnervation for amputees, and nerve and tendon transfers.

His extensive training enables him to treat the full spectrum of conditions affecting the hand, wrist, and elbow. These include traumatic injuries, fractures, arthritis, tendon and ligament injuries, trigger finger, Dupuytren’s disease, tumors, cysts, cancer, vascular disorders, and conditions requiring microsurgical reconstruction. His fellowship also included advanced training in arthroscopic and endoscopic techniques, replantation and revascularization, and the treatment of pediatric hand injuries.

Originally from Texas, Dr. Meter grew to love Las Vegas during his residency and now proudly calls the city home. After completing his fellowship, he returned to Las Vegas and joined the Hand Center of Nevada.

Although he is the first physician in his family, Dr. Meter comes from humble beginnings and was raised with strong core values. He brings a straightforward philosophy to the care of every patient:

“If at all possible, leave it better than you found it.”

This principle guides the way he approaches every patient, situation, and case.
